What is Gaydar?“Gaydar” is generally defined as “the ability to distinguish homosexual and heterosexual people using indirect cues rather than explicit information about sexual orientation” (Rieger, Linsenmeier, Gygax, Garcia & Bailey 2010). It is important to mention that the person the “gaydar” is being used on typically isn’t aware, and so, isn’t intentionally giving or withholding these cues. These cues, which are mostly nonverbal in nature, are acknowledged and analyzed in seconds, usually without the receiver even knowing it. No matter how long a person spends viewing someone else, they can generally tell someone’s sexual orientation with a fair amount of accuracy.
